The Truth About Love (2004)

The Truth About Love, frankly I wasn't expecting much from it but I gave it a shot because of Jennifer Love Hewitt. Why Jennifer Love Hewitt signed up for a direct to DVD British film is a mystery to me, but the premise of the film is nothing new. Alice Holbrook (Jennifer Love Hewitt) receives a Valentine Card which she believes is from her husband Sam, but turns out it was sent by his best friend Arcy (Dougray Scott). Why she would suspect her husband mailed her a Valentine Card is another mystery to me and only the beginning of this film's rather bizarre plot.

I response to the Valentine card she believed was from her husband, Alice decides to send Sam a card, but when he never mentions receiving it (because he thought is was from someone else) she becomes suspicious. Thinking her husband might be cheating on her Alice decides to test him by calling him on his phone and flirting with him in a mysteriously sexy voice, later making plans for a secret meeting. Ironically she finds out that he is indeed cheating on her with some other woman, and he's now agreeing to go out with the mysterious woman on the phone named "anonymous", which is her.

What amazes me most about these stories is how the husband is usually cheating with a woman who isn't in the same league as their wife. Why would you cheat on Jennifer Love Hewitt with trailer trash? Makes no sense. Even after Alice finds out about her husband's affair she continues her toying with him, hoping she can win him back. But it's clear her husband is a total jerk, and her friend (best friend of her husband) is the guy she should be married to.

As a whole the acting wasn't bad, Jennifer does a great job and amazingly enough might even be one of her best roles as it's a completely different role for her. Many people actually believe her voice in dubbed to sound English, it's definitely hard to get over Jennifer with a British accent but it is her regardless of what others may say. The culprit is the audio quality of the film which at times is quite horrible, sounding almost like the entire film was dubbed over with the volume of the dialogue not matching up with the volume of any of the other sound. As for the story it's quite predictable, but it still managed to keep my attention. While The Truth About Love is coined as a romantic comedy there's not much here that's truly humorous, maybe it's British humor. Overall, if you’re a Jennifer Love Hewitt fan you'll probably find this film quite enjoyable, because as I mentioned it's surprisingly one of her best performances, plus she's hot as usual, especially with a wig on!

6/10
