Back to the Future (1985)

What can I possibly say about one of the greatest films of all-time? Back To The Future is a film that will stand the test of time as one of the greatest films of our time, and one of the great trilogies of modern cinema.

Michael J. Fox stars as Marty McFly, a young teenage kid with a beautiful girlfriend, a pain-in-the-butt principal always on his case, and a ridiculously quirky and embarrassing family, but all that is about to change. Marty is good friends with the local crazy inventor Doctor Emmett Brown, who has recently completed his greatest invention yet, a time machine made out of a DeLorean.

The Doc has created the flux capacitor, which is what "makes time travel possible", although plutonium is needed to provide the vehicle with enough power to initiate the "flux of time". Of course plutonium is not easy to come by, but the Doc was able to swindle a group of Libyans into providing him with some in return he provided them with a fake bomb made of pinball parts. But soon the Libyans discover that they were swindled and they come looking for revenge.

The Libyans discover Doc and Marty in the process of testing the time machine and in an attempt to escape from them, Marty jumps into the time machine and tries to outrun them, initiating the time machine and taking him back to 1955. Stuck 30 years in the past Marty must find a way back to his time.  But his trouble is only about to begin as he interferes with the meeting of his mother and father, now instead of his mother falling in love with his father she's falling in love with him!  This meeting creates a paradox in time which will slowly begin to eliminate Marty from existence, unless he can get his parents to fall in love and do so within a week before the only opportunity he has to return to 1985 is gone.

Back To The Future is one of the few films that I never grow tired of watching, I don't know how many times I've watched this film but it never grows old, something I can rarely say that about some of my other favorite films. It's the concept of time travel which makes this film so great, and it's a concept that no one else has been able to duplicate as flawlessly as it's been done in this series. Technically the title “back to the future” is an oxymoron since the future is forward, not back, and in all actuality they only went into the future once.

Everything about this film is awesome, the acting, the story, the props, everything. My favorite scene in the film is always when Marty performs Johnny Be Good at the school dance, I always get a kick out of that. It's also amazing how the DeLorean has now become a collector's item, when in actuality it was a complete flop when first manufactured, but I would pick one of these up if I ever found one cheap. I was looking on autotrader.com and people wanted upwards of $20,000 for one! In the end, it may not be the best film ever made, but it’s the best in what it attempts to be, and that is a fun and exciting comedic adventure that will continue to bring in fans for generations to come!

10/10

  2. I wonder when will this movie be taken back to future for a fashionable reboot :) I hear TEEN WEREWOLF is getting a reboot, and we already know 90% of other 80's hits are getting remakes.
This was one of the biggest movies of my childhood, they used to broadcast it during winter school breaks in my country, and all the kids would anxiously wait to watch it in winter mornings.

  4. Dezmond - I think Back To The Future is one of those films we're unlikely to be seen remade anytime soon. Much like Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and so other classics I don't think there's many people out there who want to touch them, because there really isn't anything you could do better. So unless Michael J Fox is up for Back To The Future IV I doubt we'll see a remake until we are both old and gray. But I could be wrong.

  5. One of the most enjoyable movies ever made.

The characters in the series are simply timeless.

  6. This movie is of grave cultural importance because it taught us one of the unforseen dangers of time travel:

If you go back in time, there's a chance your mom will WANT TO MAKE OUT WITH YOU.

    Great blog!
