Munchies (1987)

The success of 1984's Gremlins spawned a series of miniature creature features throughout the 1980's, probably the worst and lowest budget was Munchies. Munchies centers around an archaeologist who discovers a small fury alien creature in the depths of a temple in Peru. He decides to smuggle it back to the United States in hopes of finally being able to prove the existence of alien life. Leaving the creature in the care of his teenage son it quickly gets loose and begins reeking havoc on a small desert town. When an airhead teenager chops it in half the madness truly begins, as because dismembering them only leads to them multiplying fourfold!

Munchies isn't unwatchable, but it is quite awful. Produced by the great B-movie writer, director, and producer Roger Corman, and starring The Carol Burnett Show's Harvey Korman in duel leading roles, I was expecting a little more at least in the way of comedy but for the most part it was only stupid. In the beginning Munchies seemed to hold some promise but it quickly heads down the road of pure cornball crap. Little gremlin type creatures who like junk food, fast cars and hot chicks, with sets and characters that appear to be rejects from Tim Burton's Edward Scissorhands. It's a rare little B-movie that's better off left lost, so don't bother searching for a copy to rent or buy, it's not worth it.
